Fuck C-10

The problem here, other then the economic reality that this bill will destroy Canada’s film and television industries, is exactly its stated purpose. McVety wants to stop the tax funding of the “grossly offensive.” Guess what bucko, Art is offensive, otherwise it isn’t Art. Art challenges perceptions, notions, taste, reality. This is its function, this is what it does and if something as vanilla as the representation of sex on screen and the use of the word fuck in the title is the lightening rod example to justify this moronic bill then Canadian Art on screen is fucking doomed.

The very nature of Art is also why the government needs to fund it but not interfere with it. The production of Art is not a profitable venture, and film and television takes a shit load of money to even do low budget productions. High risk, high capital input, low return ventures are not what any investor wants to sink his money into, so without the government to sweeten the pot nothing would ever be made, and unless the government doesn’t interfere then there really isn’t any point because all you will make is bland, meaningless retreads, not Art.

So fuck off with your fundamentalist Christian rhetoric about this is not censorship. Your worries about your tax dollars being used to make porn are ludicrous. Porn doesn’t need tax credits, its porn, it makes money hand over fist (or cock over fist as the case may be), and in some cases it is used to then support Art. Its how P.T. Anderson got his start, and the classic T&A movie Porky’s (not porn but I’m sure McVety would disagree) is one of the cornerstones of the Canadian film industry. So even porn and T&A are already two up on you fuck nuts.

Just like basic research in science, Art doesn’t make money, it costs money, but they remain essential to any progress being made and is the manure that feeds the mainstream money makers. Often the better the Art, the less money it makes. (Why do you think they have the term starving artists?) Canada has and can produce startling, provocative, brilliant, revolutionary, daring and unique Art. We have too, it is our niche, we are to few and too tightly wedged between America’s toes not to. It is the only way our voice can be heard over the din of the southern behemoth. If you keep starving and strangling Canadian Art we will be lost as a people and a nation, nothing more then a wad of toe jam stuck under the nail of the great Yankee elephant. A notion I find none too appealing.
