To Buy A Dying Man

Little surprise that more conservative sleaze is oozing up from under the floor boards, though I doubt anyone suspected that they would sink this low.  To offer the dying Cadman a million dollar life insurance policy to topple Martin’s government.  It’s a strange story, but here’s what points to it being true.

Let’s tackle the conservative defense first. They say that Cadman “the day of the vote said there were no offers made.”  They also accuse anyone who questions this as doubting the word of a dying man.  He actually said neither Martin nor Harper personally at specific meetings made offers, which no one is accusing them of. There is also the next point which could be why he mentioned nothing.

The conservatives claim that he would have brought it up at the time. Would he? The man had 2 months to live, do you think he really wanted to spend his last days on earth dealing with a shitstorm of this magnitude. It would have taken all the time he had left away from his wife and child. It makes sense to me that he would have kept the lid on it at the time in order to keep for himself what little life he had left. At the same time he knew it was seriously wrong and needed to be dealt with so he asked a reporter to make sure the story got told. Pretty sensible if you ask me.

The conservatives claim they only offered him financial aid in terms of campaign financing. Oh really. You offered a man with two months left to live campaign funding. That’s certainly laughable, the man was most definitely not running again, he was dying remember.

The other hilarity was the conservatives claiming that no insurance company would offer that kind of policy to a dying man.  No they wouldn’t, but this was not an above board policy, this was a BRIBE. Don’t tell me strings couldn’t be pulled to get a million dollars into his family’s pocket once he died. I am not that naive.

Mister Harper on tape then says that member’s of his party, acting as official representatives, did offer him financial inducement for his vote. That is called a bribe Mr. Harper. Oxford can help us out on this one. “Bribe: dishonestly persuade someone to act in one’s favour by paying them or giving other inducement.”  Simple as that Mister Harper, your party tried to bribe him.

Cadman’s wife confirms the story. The fact that she is still a candidate for your party does not speak well of her intelligence. She has stated it was a bribe but apparently hasn’t made the connection between her angry husband telling her that the conservative party tried to bribe him and the fact that the conservative party might not be such a great organization to be a part of. Luckily her much more on the ball daughter gave her a talking to, as she seems to get the fact that the conservatives are a sleazy organization indeed.

The daughter also confirms the story saying her father told her directly about the bribery attempt.  She also pointed out the cruel position the conservatives put Mr. Cadman in. To decide whether to leave his family financially secure for one little vote must have tortured the poor man during the last days of his life. Quite the gift to leave the dying Mr. Harper. Has your party thought about hospice work? You guys seem to have a real knack for comforting those with little time left.

I would like to pay respect to the man who turned this offer down. A man who had already left this same party and who stood on principles that you may never understand Mister Harper.  I hope your whole party feels shame for its actions but I doubt your party is that morally sophisticated.

So yes, this issue should go to directly to official inquiry, to criminal investigation and to election.  Since Mulroney is refusing to cooperate the ethics commissioner has some time freed up to deal with you and your sleaze ball minions. Wait, what party was Mulroney leader of again? Oh yeah, the conservative party. Anyone else detect a pattern?
